Novel 4-alkylsubstituted-3-hydroxy-3-pyrroline-2,5-diones of the formula
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="23" wi="47" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl group having from 6 to 16 carbon atoms or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, are disclosed which inhibit glycolic acid oxidase and thus are useful in the treatment and prevention of calcium oxalate kidney stone formation. A novel process for their preparation is also disclosed.
