PURPOSE:To measure a specific gravity of an electrolyte accurately in a short time by inserting a specific gravity sensor of an ultrasonic type or optical type meter between the bottom of plates and bottom surface of a battery container to avoid the influence of babbles. CONSTITUTION:Electrode 4, 5 provided with leads 2, 3 are contained in an electrolyte container 1, and an electrolyte 6 comprising aqueous sulfuric acid solution is filled to form a lead-acid battery. A sensor 10 of an ultrasonic type or optical type hydrometer 9 is inserted in the container 1 to measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte 6. In the case of the ultrasonic hydrometer 9, specific gravity signals are obtained from an oscillating and receiving element 18 with a converter 12 through an oscillation receiving plate 13, reflecting plate 15, and the electrolyte 6. When, the sensor 10 is inserted in a space 8 formed between the bottom surface of the container 1 and the bottom of plates 4, 5. Thus, babbles are free from the space and the measurement is accurate because the sensor 10 is provided on the bottom avoiding the influence of babbles generated from the plates 4, 5. |
