PURPOSE:In the manufacture of carbide in which the heat necessary for the reaction is fed by burning combined substances without feed of external heat, the combined substances are preferentially burned to increase the yield. CONSTITUTION:A briquet (A) composed of an alkaline earth metal oxide and a carbon source such as charcoal or coke is mixed with the burning substance (the above carbon source) and they are heated under an oxygen atmosphere to effect the reaction, thus making an alkaline earth metal carbide in which a briquet (A) covered with an oxidation-resistant substance such as calcium oxide is used. Consequently, the coverage with the substance inhibits the penetration of oxygen into the briquet, resulting in preferential burning of the burning substance (B) and high yield of carbide formation. |
