The fireplace has horizontal, hollow square-section tubes connected into the double-skinned fireback. Air or water enters the bank of tubes at the front and is discharged at the top of the fireback. The horizontal tubes are at a height of 3 or 4 centimetres above a double ash grill. The lower grill is fixed whilst the upper one can slide to and fro. As the fuel burns on the horizontal tubes the ash falls onto the composite ash grill plate. The speed of combustion is controlled by shaking the ashes through the grill to regulate the flow of combustion air. The volume between the grill plate and the fire tubes is enclosed by the side plates so that the combustion air has to flow through the grill.
|
