Seal for journal bearing - uses elastic tongue from shaft mounted ring with tongue pressure countered by compressed air feed at high speeds

The seal (5) is used in association with journal bearings (3,4) for a revolving shaft (1), being applicable to the mounting of a lathe spindle (1) in a head stock (2). It comprises a rectangular section body (11) with an obliquely cantilevering tongue (12), the former gripping the shaft (1) barrel, and the latter bearing elastically on a radial shoulder (13) of a bolted collar to complete the seal. Compressed air (25) is fed (21,23,24) into the annular volume to offset tongue (12) pressure and reduce both friction and wear at high shaft speeds. Alternatively the seal body may attach to the pillow block with a tongue bearing on the shaft, and the volume may also communicate with the atmosphere through a restricted annular aperture (29).
