The device for holding externally-opening shutters closed or ajar includes an L-shaped plate (22) attached to one shutter (2) which contains several holes arranged to receive the hooked end (20) of a bar (10). The other end of the bar is pivotally mounted to another shutter (1) or to a fixed portion e.g. of the window frame. The hooked end of the bar is locked into one of the holes in the plate by a locking mechanism (30) which pref. consists of a releasable spring biassed arm (34) pivoting vertically about an axis (33) above the bar.
