The process separates a mixture of light and heavy fluids, and sometimes mud. The mixture passes initially into a sediment tank, the mixture of light and heavy liquids then passing to a light fluid separator. To remove the mud from the mud tank without light fluids such as oil, the light fluids are pressed into the separator by application of water pressure. The separating unit includes inlet (7) and outlet (8) with outlet branch (11) terminating in a common vent pipe (12) to atmosphere. Light fluid inlet includes a dome (4) and inlet pipe (14) which is controlled by valve (15).
