The shading and insulating device comprises a row of inverted U-section rails (6) at intervals, each accommodating a large number of travelling rolls. In each rail section is reciprocally guided a rope (9) which is wound on an unwound from a winch drum (10). Two webs (8) of the shading material extend for the width of the set of rails and are fixed to the rolls. The foremost roll in the haulage direction is engaged by the respective section of the rope. At the end of the rails may be provided a curtain which can be drawn, and which extends for the height of the rails. Black sheet or cloth can be used for shading.
