The four-stroke rotary piston engine comrises a housing (7) with internal contours formed by part-circular and part-elliptical arcs. A central shaft carries two pairs of rotatable rings (3a,3i), each ring having two diametrically opposed axial pivots on which the radially inner ends of two sector-shaped piston elements (4) are swivellable. The swivel motion of each element is controlled by eight spokes (2) fixed on the shaft carrying guide pins engaging respective curved guide slots in the radially outer regions of the respective elements. The housing has diametrically opposed inlet (9) and exhaust (10) ports and sparking plugs (11) thus producing two four-stroke cycles per revolution and each element has a peripheral ignition chamber (6).
