<p>The workpieces are made of a material which is brittle, or becomes brittle during cold working. The inner wall of the hollow workpiece is exposed to a uniform hydrostatic- or mechanical pressure (Ip) while its outer wall is exposed to a lower pressure (Op); and cold deformation of the workpiece is obtd. by the positive difference Ip-Op. The positive difference may be varied during progressive deformation of the workpiece; and both ends of a cylindrical workpiece may be exposed to an external pressure (Ep) which is smaller or larger than Op. The workpieces are esp. generator cap rings, made of non-magnetic austenitic steel. Process is used esp. to increase the yield point of austenitic steels while also increasing the bore dia. of the workpiece.</p> |
