Alphanumeric display system for vehicle itinerary - has electromagnetically rotated coloured flaps forming patterns for numbers and letters

The system displays route number, stopping places and destination for a given journey. The display can be readily seen in daylight, is robust and has an unlimited supply of letters and numbers to describe any desired information. Each letter or number is formed from a matrix of hinged flaps by rotating flaps at required positions round through 180 degrees so as to produce a different coloured region whose shape corresponds to the number or letter. The flaps are rotated by small electromagnets (E) excited in response to signals retrieved from read only memories, that convert a number or letter into a pattern of signal for the flaps. Each electromagnet rotates a permanent magnet (P) which influences a magnetic plate on the panel.
