<p>A device for improving safety in roller skates and particularly for preventing the skater from falling over backwards consists of a brake mounted behind the rear rollers; when the skater starts to fall over backwards, downward pressure on the heel brings this brake into contact with the ground. It can also be used for intentional stopping by pressing down the heel. Pref. the brake is about 5 cm behind the rear axis and 3 cm above the ground. In addn. a conventiona front brake or stopper may be used. Brakes are of plastics material. The rear brake consists of a trailing roller behind the main sets of rollers attached to an oscillating arm which, when tilted, applies a conventional brake shoe to the rim of the rear rollers.</p> |
