PURPOSE:To obtain adenine in high purity and yield, by reducing an arylazomalononitrile with formic acid or a derivative thereof in the presence of ammonia and Raney nickel containing active carbon as a catalyst catalytically. CONSTITUTION:An arylazomalononitrile is reacted with formic acid or a derivative thereof, e.g. formamide or a formic ester, in the presence of ammonia to give a pyrimidine intermediate, which is then reduced in the presence of Raney nickel containing 1-300%, based on the Raney nickel, active carbon as a catalyst at 130-160 deg.C under pressure of hydrogen for several hours catalytically to give adenine without forming a by-product. |
