The stretcher is intended for transporting an invalid, or other load. It is assembled on loading and comprises rigid support bars inserted from either side under the person, which have mounting forks at the bar ends. A mobile transport unit (10) has a lifting mechanism (7) and extensible transport bars (9), the latter having frames (6) at their free ends. The frames also use the lifting mechanism and a coupling rod (22). Frames, lifting mechanisms, transport bars and coupling rod all fold onto the transport unit. The longitudinal edges of the support bars can be chamfered and can also contain sickle- shaped notches.
