<p>A web severing device has a pair of spaced-apart carriages (20,22) straddling the path of a web (24), a severing blade (30) being attached to one of the carriages (20). Power means (62) are provided for moving the carriages (20,22) toward each other. Resilient means (76) engages and urges upwardly surface (80) of a pivot link (34) which pivots to move carriage (26) downwardly to bring the blade (28) into severing contact with the web (24). Resilient means (70, 72, 74) are provided to prevent activation of the severing blade (30) if a relatively rigid foreign object such as a human finger is accidentally embraced between the carriages thereby to prevent injury. When only the web (24) is disposed between the carriages a portion (76) of the resilient means also functions to urge the blade-carrying carriage intoweb severing contact.</p> |
