A T-shaped blood access device 10 is provided which is adapted for implantation into a patient and which has its stem portion 11 extending outwardly above the skin of the patient. An elastomeric septum 18 is position in sealing relationship in the stem adjacent the junction with the main conduit portion. The septum is locked in place by a removable spring retaining ring 24. A cavity above the septum is provided for keeping the assembly sterile by use of a sterilizing fluid. Cooperating structures include needle assemblies 41-43, stem caps for retaining sterilizing fluid within the cavity, specialized tools designed to facilitate placement or replacement of the septum, a back-up system which can seal the device while still permitting continued use thereof when the primary septum 18 has begun to fail and an implant cap which is used to protect the interior of the device during implantation thereof. <IMAGE> |
