There is provided a novel apparatus and method for the protection of electrical equipment from high voltage transients. The method comprises directing any transient above a predetermined minimum voltage level through a recoverable spark gap to ground; delaying said transient for a sufficient time to allow said spark gap to fire and filtering out to ground that portion of a transient below said pretetermined minimum level and above a predetermined maximum voltage level. The apparatus is capable of carrying out the steps required in the method and comprises a recoverable spark gap, an L-C filter and voltage variable resistor.
