p-Aminophenol(I) was purified by contacting alkali metal aq. solns. of I with H2O-insol. inert org. solvents followed by recovery of I. Thus, 130 g I (purity 96.2%) in 480 g 10% aq. NaOH contg. 3 g Na2S2O4 was filtered, the filtrate stirred with 100 g PhNH2 1hr at 40oC twice, the aq. layer made pH 7.2 with 50% H2SO4, and cooled to 20oC to precipitate 123.7 g I (purity 99.3%)
