<p>New liq. crystal cpds. are 4-(5-R-1,3-dioxan-2-yl) benzonitriles of formula (I), (where R is alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, aroyloxy or opt. esterified COOH). (I) are stable liq. crystals with low viscosities, relatively low transition temps., and low threshold voltages on In oxide surfaces. Prefd. cpds. (I) are those where R is 1-8C n-alkyl. (I) can be prepd. by reacting HOCH2CH(R1)CH2OH with (III) to obtain (I, R=R1) (where R1 is alkyl).</p> |
