The engine has a piston (7) which has a recess (21) to form a second combustion chamber. The recess is connected to the main combustion space (20) in the cylinder by a nozzle (18), preferably made of ceramic material, fitted in the piston crown (17). The nozzle gives a restricted passage (19) between the two combustion spaces (20, 21), through which the fuel-air mixture has to pass during compression and combustion. The combustion and expansion process is improved and better fuel consumption is obtained.
