The sharpening machine is particularly for hand knives and chisels, whose edge bears against a rotary grinding wheel. The driving shaft (13) supporting the wheel (14) turns in a guide rail (11), preferably in the form of a column (21), on which is a support (12) for the knife (2), adjustable in relation to the driving shaft. The shaft can extend through an aperture (23) machined in the rail, working in a bearings (24) on one or both sides of the rail. The latter can be fixed to a baseplate, on which is a motor, driving the shaft by a toothed belt, or other suitable arrangement.
