The honing tool has a large number of tool holders pressed by a component having ramp faces and sliding axially towards the surface of the work. The tool holders (5,6) accommodate tools (7,8) of different kinds. Those of one kind can be pressed against the surface of the work by the sliding component (2) via a spring member (14). One kind can be honing stones, with tools of another kind between each pair of stones, typically diamond honing strips. The movement can be transmitted to the latter also via a spring member.
