Industrial furnace for carburising metals. The furnace is esp. of the pusher type, and has a treatment chamber fed with a carburising gas, the excess gas being burnt in a flare located at the inlet and/or outlet of the furnace. The flare is provided with an igniter; and a flame detector which is used to trigger the igniter only in the absence of a flame at the outlet of the flare. The igniter pref. consists of a pair of electrodes creating a spark directly above the flare outlet and in the path of the carburising gas. Alternatively, when there is no flame at the flare outlet, another gas may be released and ignited, and used to ignite the excess carburising gas. The use of a pilot flame obtd. e.g. from town gas, and using an appreciable amt. of the latter, is eliminated.
|
