The prodn. of a biocompatible porous membrane with a definite sepn. sharpness (exclusion limit) involves coating the porous membrane with biocompatible isotropic C (I). The active pt. of the membrane is produced entirely from (I). The membrane can be perforated first and then coated with (I) or coated with (I) and then perforated. Perforation can be effected by ion or nuclear ray bombardment, followed by etching, whilst the (I) coating can be produced by cathode sputtering, ion beam sputtering, ion plating and/or electron beam evapn. It is also possible to apply (I) to a substrate, e.g. a PTFE film, e.g. by cathode sputtering, then bombard it with a beam of particles to perforate it, after which the (I) film is transferred to a supporting membrane. In comparison with certain other membranes, which adsorb and/or change proteins, the new membrane is more compatible, is not harmful to body fluids, esp. blood, when in contact with these and does not suffer impairment to its function by deposition or adsorption. Membranes of this type are useful as plasma sepn. membranes and sensors, e.g. glucose sensors implanted in the bloodstream.
|
