The direct injection Diesel engine with overhead camshaft has a crankshaft (8) which carries gear (11). Injection pump (9) is driven by gear (10) through intermediate gear (12) from gear (11). The camshaft of injection pump (9) extends through the casing and carries toothed wheel (14). This drives wheel (16), which is fixed to the engine camshaft, by means of timing belt (15). By driving the fuel pump directly, a stiff drive without backlash is obtained and torsional vibrations are reduced.
