The high density data recording system uses a disc with information stored and read by an optical system that uses a laser beam that is reflected off metallised areas. The system is designed to provide an improved technique for production of the metal coating with high accuracy. The process begins with a blank of a heat conducting material that is coated on both sides with a reflecting surface. This can be produced by vapour deposition or by a galvanic process. Information is stored in the metallised layer using a conventional process and the surface is coated with a lacquer of not more than 5 micron thickness. An alternative process uses a pressing operation for forming the metallised layer, which may be of silver or aluminium.
