PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for an organic solvent of synthetic fiber treating agent under mild conditions in high yield, by reacting an alkylene oxide with CO2 in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a crown compound and an alkali metallic halide. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H, alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl), e.g. ethylene oxide, is reacted with CO2 in a molar amount of 1-5 times, preferably 1-3 times, that of the compound of formula I to give the titled compound of formula II. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a crown compound such as a compound of formula III (M is Na, K, etc.; X is Cl, Br, etc.; A is O, N or S. n is 4-8) and an alkali metallic halide in an amount in the range of 0.001-10mol% based on the compound of formula I. The titled colorless and odorless compound of high quality can be obtained at a relatively low temperature and pressure, and the catalyst is reusable. |
