A gyroscopic compass has a single neutrally suspended gyro rotor held in the horizontal plane by a torque generated by displacing a mass on the gyro rotor support in the direction of the rotor axis. It eliminates the problem of unknown long-term deflections in azimuth caused by unknown centre of gravity displacement associated with oil displacement mass arrangements and the extreme balancing requirements for different degrees of freedom. The rotor support, which carries the rotor bearing is mounted in a floating sphere so as to rotate about a gimbal axis. The gimbal axis intersects the rotor axis at the centre point of the rotor support and the parts resting on it. These parts include the displacement mass, its corresp. motor and a motor control accelerometer measuring along the rotor axis.
|
