At least the thermoplastic fibres of a fibre matting are in the form of hollow fibres, with hermetically sealed points at suitable intervals. Pref. the hollow fibres have outer dia. of 0.2-8.0 mm, esp. 0.3-5.0 mm. At least the ends of the hollow fibres are sealed. The fibre matting is pref. composed in part of continuous hollow filaments, with hermetically sealed points at intervals. The matting structure is pref. formed by several looped layers. The hollow fibres and the other continuous filaments are pref. bonded together by thermoplastic adhesion in the matting. A film or woven-type cladding is applied to at least one of the fibre matting upper surfaces during moulding. The hollow fibres and/or the hollow continuous filaments are of different dias., with the thinnest fibres concentrated in the outer layers of the matting. The hollow fibres and the continuous filaments are of different thermoplastic materials, and there is less than 50 wt.% of filler material and/or non-thermoplastic fibres in the matting. The hollow fibres and the hollow continuous filaments are filled with an inert fire-dampening gas. Designed for use as moulded panel sections, such as automobile dashboards or armrests, the structure gives a lightweight material which is easily moulded.
|
