PURPOSE:To execute a high speed operation, by dividing a picture element into two groups of black and white, prior to encoding, measuring the number of states belonging to each group, and deciding whether it is possible to realizes data compression or not. CONSTITUTION:As for a picture element signal which has been applied to the terminal 1, the number of black and white runs N1 and N2 is measured by the state measuring circuit 3. Subsequently, the sum of those which have multiplied N1 and N2 by coefficients a1, a2 is derived, and a selective signal corresponding to the result of comparing said sum with the number of picture elements L is output to the run-length encoder 4 and the multiplexer 5. The encoder 4 encodes the length of runs of white and black. This encoding output is provided to the multiplexer 5, and in response to a selective signal from the circuit 3, a sampled value which has been encoded or its original sampled value which has not been encoded is selected, and it is provided to the terminal 6. Accordingly, since the run-length is encoded only when a data compression is feasible, and a high speed operation is executed. |
