The invention concerns a process for the production of an aqueous polymer dispersion by emulsion polymerisation wherein at least one monomer containing a phosphoric acid, sulphonic acid or carboxylic acid group or emulsifying group is present, at least one emulsifier is present and in which at least one compound containing a polyoxyethylene chain of 60 to 400 oxyethylene units is present chosen from the group of polyoxyethylene glycols, emulsifiers containing a polyoxyethylene chain and copolymerisable monomers containing a polyoxyethylene chain. Said dispersion is very suitable for use in high-gloss paints.
