Hot top slabs (10) for lining ingot or other moulds (17) are fitted with retaining plates (12), which are secured to the upper edge of the hot top slab. Each retaining plate is provided with a hole (13) which is exposed above the material of the hot top slab. Location in the ingot mould is by a flexible mounting device (18), e.g. a wire, passed through the hole (13) of the retaining plate (12) and secured along that side of the hot top slab which faces the interior of the mould.
