The disclosure relates to a method of treating hide for leather manufacture, the method comprising the steps of treating softened hide with lime, deliming the hide by treatment in an aqueous treatment bath under agitation and with the addition of a lime-dissolving substance, bating, pickling and tanning. In the method according to the present invention, use is made of a gas containing carbon dioxide as the lime-dissolving substance. The gas is added to the treatment bath continuously or at intervals in that it is dissolved in the treatment bath substantially throughout the entire deliming process. A further characterizing feature of the present invention is that it is possible to carry out the bating process in the treatment bath for deliming without removing ions dissolved therein. |
