Compounds of the general formula <IMAGE> (which are useful intermediates in the preparation of prostaglandins) are prepared from compounds of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, A is a hydrocarbon chain which contains 5, 6 or 7 C atoms and contains at least one alkenylene or alkynylene group and can be substituted by one or more lower alkyl radicals, and OTrialkylBS represents a tri-C2-C6-alkylbenzenesulphonyl group, by reduction with alkali metal borohydride and subsequent hydrolysis and allyl rearrangement. In an example, the triisopropylbenzenesulphonate of 2-(6-carbomethoxyhexyl)-4-hydroxycylcopenta-1,3-dione is reduced using NaBH4 with subsequent hydrolysis and allyl rearrangement; this takes place spontaneously in an acidic medium and affords 2-(6-carbomethoxyhexyl)-4-hydroxy-2-cyclopenten-1-one in high yield.
