Acoustic characteristic determination system for room - generates sound which is sensed, filtered and compared under microprocessor control as sound level is progressively increased

The system is used to determine and alter the acoustic characteristics of a room and uses a sound of a predetermined spectral characteristic in the room, the sound is received at least one chosen point in the room and is converted into an electric signal. The signal is passed through a series of filters to produce different frequency band signals which are fed to respective level regulating units. The units produce respective continuously variable control signal, from the filtered signals. The sound level is progressively increased while each control signal is compared with a set threshold level and the regulating level of each unit reduced when its output signal exceeds the respective set threshold. The sound level is increased until all units are subject to a reduction in regulating level when the degree of regulation of each unit is then measured to indicate the room acoustics. The process is effected in a very short time using microprocessor control.
