Mouldings for use as internal lining of passenger compartments of motor vehicles are made with a smaller wall thickness that is required for adequate stability. They are instead reinforced by stiffening ribs on the inside. A decorative lining of foil, foam or textile material is stretched across the inside over the ribs to mask the latter and achieve a smooth appearance. Mouldings of this kind can be made of any usual engineering material such as sheet metal, cellulose or lignocellulose or unfilled, filled or reinforced thermoplastic materials. The provision of internal ribs permits a wall thickness reduction of 50%. The ribs can also be used to accomodate the snap fasteners for the bodywork. The volume between the ribs and of any perforations can be filled with foam when the decorative top layer is applied. This top layer can consist of a foil with a textile reinforcing carrier and a foam lining. Such mouldings save weight but have at least the same strength, stiffness and acoustic properties.
