The arrangement is intended for taking sheet metal plates from a stack (7) and placing them individually or in smaller stacks (20) on a liftable cross-bar support (2) for subsequent treatment in an annealing furnace (1), or in reverse order at exit of furnace. It comprises suction lift elements (17-19) which, one after the other, pick up a plate from the top of the stack and then move across to deposit these plates on the cross-bar support. The lift elements are preferably arranged side by side and a carriage (4) is successively positioned so that the starting stack is below each of them in succession.
