The lifting device is for pieces of material, esp. items made from non-magnetic material. The lifter can raise the pieces of material using an adhesive force. The lifter is fitted with an adhesive surface (21) to produce the adhesive force required. The adhesive surface is positioned on an adhesive band (12) and the lifting device also includes a conveyor installation (13, 14, 20) for the adhesive band (12). In addition there is stepped drive for the conveyor installation controllable in rhythm with the lifter, as well as a tensioning device (15, 16, 17) for the adhesive band.
