<p>Long-life blue-emitting electroluminescent powder (I) is based on a ZnCdS contg. 8-18 mole%MgS. (I) contains 1-3 mole-% CdS and 1-3 mole-% Cu, which is added as sulphate during (I) mfr. (I) is subjected to at least 3 calcination processes, first in a H2S gas stream, second in a stagnant N2-S vapour atmos. and third in a stagnant N2-O2 atmos. Cooling is slow after the first calcination and fast after the second and third. The electroluminescent display has a transparent conductive glass substrate plate with a vacuum-evaporated Al2O3.SiO2 insulating film as break-through layer. (I) is embedded in a high dielectric synthetic resin film produced by condensation of acrylic acid with p-aminobenzonitrile. (I) is specified for use in electroluminescent displays. The incorporation of MgS produces a blue shift in the emission.</p>
