PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high selectivity with small amount of by-products, by subjecting a 1,1-diarylethane to catalystic cracking in a flow containg hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst of zeolite which is subjected to aluminum removing treatment. CONSTITUTION:A 1,1-diarylethane shown by the formula I (R1-6 is H or CH3) is subjected to catalytic cracking in H2-containing flow in the presence of a catalyst of zeolite which has undergone aluminum removing treatment with an inorganic acid (preferably hydrochloric acid) or an organic acid, to give styrenes shown by the formulas II and III. A molar ratio of silica/alumina of zeolite subjected to aluminum removing treatment is 5-400. The amount of H2 to be added to the reaction system is 0.01-50 times moles based on 1mol raw material. When the addition amount is smaller than this, the conversion and selectivity of the raw material are reduced and the precipitation of carbon on the catalyst increases markedly so that catalytic activity is lowered. |
