<p>A welding apparatus for permanently joining thermoplastic workpieces which are normal to each other, more especially the drum jacket 42 and the head plates 38, 44 of an electroplating drum, comprises a heater having on one side a heating surface 64 and on its opposite side a heating bar 62 for the slot-like melting-open of the respective workpiece surface. Holding devices 20, 22 serve to hold the workpieces 38, 42. An adjusting device 28 sets the heater 46 according to a desired position between the workpiece surfaces to be welded together, these surfaces being pressed into contact with the heater to effect heating thereof, and for the subsequent pressing together of the heated workpiece surfaces, after withdrawal of the heater 46. The holding devices 20, 22 and the heater 46 are adjustable relative to one another in directions that are vertical to one another.
