A language processor for high level programme language has a microprogrammed controller driving a processing unit according to an intermediate language held in a main store. It can process directly an intermediate language derived by analysis from a high level language. The main store has parallel data paths each with a storage block for bytes with odd or even addresses. The storage blocks are controlled by the lowest value address bit. When a read follows nomination of an address, the addressed byte and the following byte are read to form a word. The word is then correctly placed on the data outputs. The processor architecture is suitable for block-oriented languages. Several processors can be combined into a processor network capable of operating in various modes.
