The system includes separate conveyors, each comprising several parallel conveyor belts driveable at the same speed perpendicularly towards a common conveyor including parallel belts, having a discontinuity where the line of the separate conveyor intersects the line of the common conveyor. A vertically movable grate comprises connected arms movable between a first position in which the arms extend into spaces between the belts of the separate conveyor, and a second position in which the arms extend when rotated through a right angle, into spaces between belts of the common conveyor. Preferably the grate is movable by means of a link motion between its two positions.
