Radial piston hydraulic motor - has passages through valve piece to provide relief from fluctuating pressures

Pistons reciprocating in radial cylinders act on the eccentric on a shaft (3). Pressurised liquid is admitted to each cylinder by a passage (4) in the motor end case (5). A valve piece (7) is keyed (8) to the shaft and has ports which control the flow of liquid to the cylinders. It is enclosed in a cover (9) on the outside of the end case. One port (6) communicates with the inlet (13) and the other port (23) communicates with the outlet. There is a passage (17) through the valve plate behind each port. Fluctuating pressures at the ports are thus transmitted to the cover without acting on the valve piece.
