PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a fungicide in high selectivity, by chlorinating the methyl group in the side chain of a phenoxytoluene with chlorine selectively in the coexistence of a sulfur-containing compound, organic halogen compound, and radical reaction initiator. CONSTITUTION:A compound, e.g., m-phenoxyltoluene, etc., shown by the formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H, halogen, alkyl, halogenoalkyl, acyl, CN, NO2, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxyl, alkoxycarbonyl) is reacted with chlorine in the coexistence of one or more sulfur-containing compounds, e.g., sulfenamides, etc., an organic halogen compound, e.g., carbon terachloride, and a radical reaction initiator, e.g., azobisisobutyronitirile, etc. at 0-150 deg.C so that the methyl group in the side chain of the compound shown by the formula I is chlorinated selectively. Simultaneously the formation of phenoxyphenyltrichloromethanes as by-products is suppressed to give compounds shown by the formulas II and III in high selectivity in high yield. |
