The gear-finishing machine has a finishing tool (14) above the workpiece (20). The tool is pivotable about an axis perpendicular to the workpiece axis. It is mounted on a carrier (13) which can reciprocate on a tiltable guide carrier. An inclined guide rail (87) engaging a slotted guide causes th e tool to rock as it is reciprocated, to produce crowned or tapered teeth. To modify the tooth shape, part of the rocking movement may be cancelled by a template or cam mechanism.
