PURPOSE:To attain to lower the basic unit of electric power by enhancing the productivity by arranging plural intermediate electrodes which is constituted from a composite material of graphite or a graphite anode part and a cathode part of an iron material and has a Mg flow passage in an upper part of a cathode surface in a row between an anode and a cathode. CONSTITUTION:The bath level of a molten electrolytic bath based on MgCl2 is maintained above an intermediate electrode 15 and voltage is applied between the anode 9 and the cathode 10 through electroconductive parts 11, 12 protruded out of an electrolytic tank 7 to carry out the electrolytic reaction. MgCl2 consumed according to the proceeding of the reaction is supplied to maintain the bath level constantly. In a trough 17 provided to an upper portion of a surface functioned as a cathode or of each intermediate electrode 15 and the surface of the cathode 10, Mg metal raised according to the density difference is caught and coveyed to a sump 19 through a conduit 20. Moreover, the Cl2 gas collected to an upper part of the tank 7 is exhausted from an exhaust port 22 and the sludge accumulated in the tank 7 is exhausted appropriately from exhaust means 8. |
