A Co-Cr magnetizable vertical-type film containing Cr at the rate of 13 to 28% by weight based on the total of Co and Cr and having a saturation magnetization larger than that of the Co-Cr bulk, having the same composition as the mean composition value of said film, is used as a layer for a magnetic recording medium.

The ratio of Co and Cr can change along the thickness of said-layer and the content of Cr can increase toward the surface of the magnetic layer.
