A froth compn. for surface treating a fabric or paper substrate, has a foam d. 0.005-0.3 g/cc, a foam bubble size 0.05-0.5 mm and a foam half-life 1-60 min and contains 5-75 wt.% functional textile treating compd., 0.2-5wt.% frothing agent, 0-5wt.% wetting agent and water. For example, a mech. foamed mixt. of 45% aq. 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidone 73.8, 3% aq. Zn(NO3)2 16.4, 30% aq. modified polyethylene softener 8.2, RO(CH2CH2O)20H(R = C11-15 sec-alkyl) frothing agent 2.2., and RO(CH2CH2O)9H(R = C11-15 sec-alkyl) wetting agent 0.4, with initial foam d. 0.06 g/cc was applied to cotton fabric by a roll-down technigue.
