The jet engine has an exhaust nozzle mounted on a fixed structure. The nozzle comprises a circumf. row of flaps, pivotally mounted to control the flow area of the exhaust duct. A seal is positioned between each pair of flaps to prevent leakage. The flaps comprise an inner flap with an outer flap spaced outer part. The inner seal(54A) is positioned to cooperate with each adjacent inner flap(44A) and the outer seal(58A) with the outer flap(48A). This provides a passage for coolant flow through the flaps and seals. The inlet of the passage receives a coolant flow of air. Guides are provided between each flap and adjacent seal.
